THE SITTING ROOM

Sitting Room

From the entrance hall is the first door on your left. This was the family sitting room or parlor which originally housed a walnut Lipp piano which was the center of many musical evenings.

The furniture at present is all of walnut of the early and mid Victorian periods, c. 1840-1860. Of particular interest, is a handsome credenza with a large oval mirror in a heavy carved surround. It has a serpentine base, topped with white carrara marble. The seven piece parlor suite consisting of sofa, ladies and gents chair plus four upright chairs of pleasing proportions.

There is also a superb center table of unusual and striking design. The craftsmanship displayed In this table is of the highest order and it is in fine original condition. There is also four tiered walnut whatnot with mirror backed shelves and barley sugar turned supports, c.1840.

On the wall, above the walnut worktable, is an oil painting of Victor Harbor, South Australia by E.H.Baggs, circa 1895. On the mantle piece is a three piece 22ct gold plated clock set, a pair of ruby luster vases and a pair of Mary Gregory vases.

Note the beaded and tapestry pole screen to protect the ladies face from the fire and the walnut firescreen with scuttle humming birds pressed in between the glass panels and brass helmet styled fire scuttle.

A rare and beautiful piece by the doorway is an oval flower picture composed entirely of sea shells and in remarkably good order considering its age.
